In Gujarat state, there is a city is known as Surat. The people of all the districts of Gujarat state want a good educational environment for their development. According to all the demands a university was established in 1967 known as Veer Narmad South Gujarat University. Initially the university known as the Surat Gujarat University. The education minister of the state handed the university. This university is also known as VNSGU. The university is recognized by the university grant commission. The university mission is to provide a highly educational environment for the students.
The university has a lot of departments for the under graduation and post graduation degree courses. The university has a lot of schools and colleges are affiliated with this. A Tentative Phased Programmed for the development of the university was started by the education minister. There are many departments Management, Engineering, Science, Commerce, Arts, Chemistry, Physics, Diploma, agriculture. The university provided the regular and part time degree courses. The university departments come in the top 5 ranks in all the established universities in Gujarat.
This was immediately taken up and strongly supported by the Education societies of Surat and Navsari which already supported and managed colleges in various disciplines imparting both Undergraduate and Postgraduate education. Moreover, these were some of the most highly reputed academic centres under both the University of Bombay and the Gujarat University.
The outcome of these moves was that at a meeting of educationsists and eminent citizens organized under the auspices of the Sarvajanik Education Society in Surat on July 31, 1960 a committee of 38 members was appointed to draw up guidelines and principles for the establishment of a separate university for South Gujarat. This document was submitted to the Chief Minister and Education Minister of Gujarat.
